The Newfoundland Breed
Newfoundlands are very large, heavily coated, and sweet-dispositioned dogs that originated from England and Canada. They are not only one of the largest dog breeds, but also one of the most intelligent. Even though they are very large, they are VERY family oriented. Newfoundlands are also one of the only breeds to have webbed feed, which enhances their ability to swim. Because of this quality, they have been known to have been used as water-rescue dogs.
Caring For Your Newfie
We feed our pups Purina Large Breed Puppy Chow. Large Breed Puppy Chow ensures that the puppy gets the proper nutrition it needs to grow into a happy, healthy puppy. It is recommended to keep your dog on puppy food for at least 12 months, and transitioning to Adult Large Breed formula by gradually adding more Adult Large Breed food to the Puppy Large Breed, while gradually decreasing the amount of the Puppy Large Breed food. You should try to make sure your Newfie does not become over/under weight. The best way to check is by rubbing your hand across your dogs side. Your Newfie's rib cage should not be visible, but you should be able to feel them run across your fingers.
It is recommended that you try to keep stairs and slippery floors to a minimum for at least the first year of you Newfies life, as they can lead to cause many hip problems in the future.
There are many things to consider before purchasing a Newfoundland puppy. At the bottom of the page, you will find links containing more information about the breed. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me through call, text or E-mail.
